It is unusual for a student to be selected as the DAPi Scholarship recipient during the first year that a chapter is in existence. However, Precious Golden has demonstrated such dedication and leadership with the Eta Kappa chapter at Portland Community College, OR, that the members of the Scholarship Review Committee believed her efforts deserved recognition. She is membership coordinator for the chapter and created and writes a newsletter, “A Slice of Pi.” Precious, or PJ, is hailed as a strong advocate for disability rights by Kari Hanken, chapter advisor. She organized an Accessibility First Job Fair, sponsored by Eta Kappa, and works tirelessly to advocate for a Disability Cultural Center. Additionally, she created a video, “Understanding Accessible Education,” where she talks about her experience as a disabled student and has presented at several conferences on the topic of ableism in the classroom. PJ is a General Studies major with a GPA of 3.80.
